Alex Rodriguez and his attorney David Cornwell both issued statements Monday responding to the news that MLB has suspended the Yankees third baseman 211 games for his involvement with the Biogenesis scandal.

Both Rodriguez and Cornwell kept their statements brief. Rodriguez expressed his disappointment with the decision, stating:
“I am disappointed with the penalty and intend to appeal and fight this through the process. I am eager to get back on the field and be with my teammates in Chicago tonight. I want to thank my family, friends and fans who have stood by my side through all of this.”
Cornwell claimed that MLB has overreached by suspending the third baseman for 211 games:
“It is regrettable that the Commissioners Office has taken this unprecedented action. MLB has gone well beyond the authority granted to its Joint Drug Agreement and the Basic Agreement. Consequently we will appeal the the discipline and pursue all legal remedies available to Alex.”
MLBPA chief Michael Weiner echoed Cornwell’s comments with a statement of his own, arguing that Bud Selig “has not acted appropriately” regarding Rodriguez’s suspension. Rodriguez has appealed the suspension, with the support of the MLBPA, but the verdict will not be known until after the season has ended.
