Peralta’s days in Detroit could be numbered
When the Tigers acquired Jose Iglesias in the Jake Peavy trade, many assumed that it would be to replace Jhonny Peralta while the Tigers shortstop is suspended. Charlie Wilmoth of MLB Trade Rumors writes that Detroit could let Peralta walk after the season, and choose to go with Iglesias as the long-term shortstop. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has even gone as far as to say that he isn't sure Peralta will come back to join the team for the postseason.
If Iglesias' batting average plummets from .323 where it currently stands, Peralta could rejoin the team as it looks to get over the hump and win the World Series. If Peralta were to hit the free agent market this offseason, there could be a healthy market for the 31-year-old shortstop.
Rangers may not re-sign Cruz
The Rangers were not happy with Nelson Cruz for accepting his punishment, and the team thinks it “would be quite difficult” to bring him back, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today via Twitter. The team is upset at Cruz for effectively missing the rest of the regular season, as the Rangers are currently in the middle of a close playoff race. Losing Cruz will leave them with a major void in their lineup and outfield.
The disappointment is not mutual, however, since Cruz would like to re-sign with the Rangers this offseason, and he also wants to play if the team makes the postseason, reports Jim Bowden of ESPN. One certainly can’t fault Cruz for wanting to serve his suspension right away, and MLB is threatening longer suspensions for those who appeal.
