Matt Moore injury: Rays LHP progressing, may throw off mound Saturday

Moore played catch Tuesday for the second time since hitting the DL, this time from 70 feet.

Tampa Bays Rays southpaw Matt Moore played catch from 70 feet on Tuesday, and could throw off the mound this weekend if his sore throwing elbow continues to feel better, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

More Rays: IT'S TOO LATE

Moore, 24, has been on the disabled list since July 29 with soreness in his left elbow. MRIs taken on his ailing arm showed no structural damage, so Moore was quick to start throwing again. The southpaw started with a bit of catch from 60 feet on Sunday, then added 10 more feet in another session Tuesday.

If Moore continues to feel no pain through the end of the week, then he could very well be throwing off a mound by Saturday or Sunday, per Topkin. If that goes well, it’s likely he will begin a rehab assignment sometime next week.

Moore, a first-time All-Star this season, was the anchor of the Rays' rotation for the first three months of the year. With David Price and Alex Cobb on the disabled list -- and Jeremy Hellickson and Roberto Hernandez turning in subpar outings -- Moore kept the club's rotation afloat, earning victories in 10 of his first 16 starts. Overall, the left-hander owns a 3.41 earned-run average and two-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio in 121⅓ innings on the year.

The Rays are hopeful that Moore will return to the rotation sometime in mid-August. They currently sit 1.5 games back of the Red Sox in the AL East.
