Archer had thrown a 93-mile-per-hour fastball to Paul Goldschmidt in the second inning, but grimaced after releasing the ball. Catcher Jose Molina and team trainers went to the mound to check on the young pitcher, and the decision to remove him from the game came almost immediately. Archer had thrown just 30 pitches up to that point, but left holding his arm.
The extent of Archer’s injury remains somewhat unclear. MLB’s official twitter classified the injury as “right forearm tightness.”
The Rays called up the 24-year-old Archer at the beginning of June. He has been one of the Rays' top pitching prospects since being acquired from the Cubs as part of the package for Matt Garza in January 2011. Since his call-up, Archer has made 12 starts and has posted a 2.65 ERA and 1.085 WHIP, helping to solidify a Rays rotation that has had it's share of struggles in 2013.
