Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins clears waivers

Rollins is having a down season, but he could be a valuable veteran addition to any club in the hunt for the postseason.

USA TODAY Sports

Jimmy Rollins has cleared waivers, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are now free to try and trade him, though there are some complications when it comes to the former MVP.

Rollins, 34, has a full no-trade clause with his 10-and-5 rights and has not given the Phillies front office any indication that he would be willing to waive it should they find a trade partner. A handful of playoff contenders could benefit by adding the veteran shortstop, including the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees given their iffy situation on the left side of the infield. St. Louis reportedly had discussions about Rollins prior to the July 31 trade deadline, although negotiations never began with Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Rollins is currently experiencing one of the worst seasons of his career. He’s batting just .255 with a .660 OPS, and he’s lost a step both on the base paths and in the field. Rollins is under contract for $11 million next year and has a vesting option for 2014. He’s owed about $3 million the rest of this season.
