Sept. 1 is a key time for Major League Baseball as league rules allow rosters to expand from the 25-man limit. Any player who is on the 40-man roster may be brought up to the majors to help in the final month of the regular season.

Some call-ups are top prospects who are seeing their first action in the majors. Some are veterans who could provide help down the stretch run for teams in a playoff chase. Some fill a very certain role: A speedster to pinch-run late in games, an emergency third catcher or relievers who can take some innings in blowout games. Some teams call up one or two players while others bring up five or six.

Not all September call-ups are made immediately. Minor league playoff serieses will begin soon and many players who will be called up will remain with their minor league squad until their postseason is done.
