MLB injury roundup: Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Bryce Harper

There is positive news on both Kemp and Harper, but Upton’s news is not so good.

Injury notes from around the MLB:

Justin Upton

Atlanta Braves outfielder Justin Upton left Tuesday's game against the Marlins early after he fouled a ball off his right knee.

Upton finished the at-bat and drew a walk, but was pulled for a pinch-hitter after trainers took a look at him. He attempted to do some jogging along the baseline, but did not look particularly comfortable.

The Braves are currently classifying the injury as a bruise and have Upton listed as day-to-day.

Upton has an .814 OPS and leads Atlanta with 24 home runs on the season. The NL East-leading Braves acquired him from the Diamondbacks in a blockbuster trade during the offseason.

Matt Kemp

Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly is optimistic that outfielder Matt Kemp will still be able to return this season, reports True Blue LA.

Kemp, who has been out with an ankle sprain since July 21, had his rehab shut down after he experienced tightness in his right hamstring last week. Kemp had spent some time on the disabled list earlier in the season with a similar injury.

“I think everybody is pretty positive that he is on a pretty good track, as far as what he’s been able to do,” Mattingly told reporters on Tuesday. “He’s been tested without being able to run.”

The running is the biggest problem for Kemp at the moment. Mattingly says he could bring Kemp back to the team now and have him pinch-hit, but that Kemp would be unable to run the bases. Kemp has recently been taking simulated at-bats fairly often in his recovery.

The Dodgers’ final game of the season will be September 29, which is just under three weeks away.

Bryce Harper

The Washington Nationals expect outfielder Bryce Harper to be back in the lineup on Wednesday, reports the Washington Post.

Harper was with the team on Tuesday after an MRI on Monday showed no structural damage to his hip. Harper has said that he has been playing injured for much of the season after two collisions with the outfield wall. He aggravated his hip injury while taking batting practice on Saturday.
