Hunter Pence, Giants open contract talks, per report

The Giants are reportedly working on locking up their 2013 home run and RBI leader.

The San Francisco Giants have begun discussing a long-term deal with outfielder Hunter Pence, according to Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pence is set to become a free agent after the season but is open to re-signing with the Giants. The 30-year-old native of Texas confirmed the talks to Schulman prior to the Giants' game against the Dodgers on Friday:

“There are conversations.”

The Giants have until five days after the World Series to get a deal done with Pence before other teams can bid on him. Pence wanted to discuss an extension with San Francisco following its World Series win last season, but the team was unwilling to work out a deal before getting a full-season's worth of a look, per Schulman.

The Giants acquired Pence from the Philadelphia Phillies at the 2012 trade deadline in exchange for Nate Schierholtz and a pair of minor leaguers. Pence hit .219/.287/.384 after the trade and posted similar numbers in the postseason. He has bounced back to post a .289/.340/.477 line in 624 plate apperances this season.
