Wandy Rodriguez injury: Pirates LHP shut down for season

Rodriguez has been dealing with elbow and forearm problems and hasn’t pitched since June.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates have shut down Wandy Rodriguez for the remainder of the season, the team announced on Saturday, as the veteran continues to deal with pain in the forearm of his throwing arm. The injury has reportedly been diagnosed as arthritis.

The 34-year-old Rodriguez has earned a 6-4 record in 12 starts and compiled a 3.59 earned run average. With a seven-game lead over the Washington Nationals for the second wild card spot and just one game separating the Pirates from the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL Central title, it would take a monumental collapse in the final 15 games for Pittsburgh not to make the postseason.

Signed by the Houston Astros in 1999, Rodriguez made his debut with the team in 2005 and played eight seasons with the Astros before he was traded to the Pirates in July 2012. He last pitched on June 5, where he threw just 14 pitches and recorded a single out before being removed from the game.

The Pirates are scheduled to finish a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
