Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez unlikely to bat again in 2013

Gonzalez was activated after rosters expanded in September, but so far has been limited to defensive duties.

Doug Pensinger

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Saturday that it is looking increasingly unlikely that outfielder Carlos Gonzalez will step up to the plate again in 2013, reports the Denver Post.

More Rockies coverage: Purple Row

Weiss has put Gonzalez on the field a handful of times the past few weeks as a defensive replacement, but a sprained right middle finger has kept him from batting.

Gonzalez suffered the injury in late July and was placed on the disabled list Aug. 7. The sprain has been slow-healing as it was not originally expected that he would miss two months. He has swung the bat on occasion during his rehab, including several rounds of batting practice as well as an 0-3 day on a minor league rehab assignment.

The Rockies scratched Gonzalez from a second rehab game after he reported the sprain was still bothering him. The team had hoped he could take batting practice a week ago, but those plans fell through.

With the team well out of playoff contention, it would make sense for the Rockies to keep Gonzalez from risking further injury to the finger.

Gonzalez has hit .302 with a 958 OPS, 26 home runs and 21 stolen bases over 109 games in 2013.
