MLB injury roundup: Stephen Strasburg scratched; Michael Cuddyer leaves game

Washington’s ace is in a familiar predicament, and the NL’s batting leader suffered an injury on Wednesday.

Rob Grabowski-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg will not make his scheduled start in the team's series opener against the Miami Marlins on Thursday, manager Davey Johnson told James Wagner of the Washington Post.

Strasburg “had a little trouble getting loose,” writes Wagner. The 25-year-old right-hander is unsure of the cause, he told Amanda Comak of the Washington Times:

“I don’t really know why it’s happening. When it happens it happens. It’s like a strong cramp.”

Gio Gonzalez will get the start on Thursday in place of Strasburg, who has been pushed back to Saturday.

Strasburg has posted a 2.96 ERA in 170 innings this season for the Nationals, who entered Wednesday trailing the Cincinnati Reds by 4½ games in the NL Wild Card race.

Other injury news from around the league:

  • Colorado Rockies outfielder Michael Cuddyer left in the seventh inning of the team's 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday with a right forearm contusion, the team announced. He is considered day-to-day. Before exiting the game, Cuddyer went 1-for-3 to maintain his four-point lead over Atlanta's Chris Johnson in the NL batting race.
  • Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams also left that game early due to a sore right elbow, according to the team (via Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). Adams' 2012 campaign ended early because of a surgical procedure to remove bone chips from that same elbow.
  • New York Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada's season is over after the 23-year-old native of Panama suffered a broken leg against the San Francisco Giants, tweets MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. Tejada hit .200/.258/.259 in 224 plate appearances.
