The St. Louis Cardinals extended their lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates to two games in the National League Central with a 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies, coupled with the Bucs' 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
NL playoff standings: Cardinals extend lead in Central
Since Aug. 10, the Cardinals have turned a four-game deficit into a two-game lead.

The two-game advantage is the Cards’ largest since July 26, when they held a 2½-game lead after winning five of their first six games following the All-Star break. St. Louis has managed a six-game swing since Aug. 10, when it trailed Pittsburgh by four in the division standings.
The Atlanta Braves moved a game closer to clinching the NL East by beating the Washington Nationals, 5-2. With the loss, the Nats fell to 5½ games behind the Cincinnati Reds, who needed 13 innings before taking care of business against the Houston Astros in the Wild Card race. The Reds trail the Pirates by a half-game for the top Wild Card spot.
The Los Angeles Dodgers failed to clinch the NL West on Wednesday after losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4.
