Around the Bases: AL Wild Card race tightens up

Rays 4, Rangers 3: Desmond Jennings hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to give Tampa Bay the top AL Wild Card spot. Jennings' big hit came an inning after David DeJesus tied the game with a two-out RBI single. Tampa Bay is a game ahead of Texas and moved to within eight of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

Royals 7, Indians 2: Kansas City pulled to within 2½ of Texas behind two-RBI performances from Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar. Perez scored twice and Escobar crossed the plate on this poorly-executed pickle by Cleveland. The Indians remain a half-game behind the Rangers.

Orioles 5, Red Sox 3: Chris Davis hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the 12th to propel Baltimore to within a game of Texas. The O's also spoiled Boston's opportunity to become the first team in baseball this season to clinch a playoff spot.

Cardinals 4, Rockies 3: Adam Wainwright struck out eight batters in 7⅔ innings on the mound and went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in on the plate to give his team a two-game advantage in the NL Central.

Padres 3, Pirates 2: Pittsburgh lost its third straight game to San Diego and is now the victim of a six-game turnaround in the division since Aug. 10. Mark Melancon blew a ninth-inning lead, spoiling a two-run homer from Andrew McCutchen and a solid start by Charlie Morton, who allowed one run and struck out nine in eight innings.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3: The Yankees are tied with the Royals at 2½ games out of the AL's final Wild Card spot thanks to Vernon Wells, who finished with two hits and two RBI against his former club.

Braves 5, Nationals 2: Atlanta cut its magic number to clinch the NL East to two and allowed Cincinnati to keep Washington at arm's length in the league's Wild Card race. Justin Upton provided the go-ahead runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Reds 6 Astros 5 (13 innings): Cincinnati's Jay Bruce hit a two-run double in the 13th inning to break a 4-4, but the Astros made them work for it. Houston got the game-tying runner to second before Aroldis Chapman finished off the save. Coupled with the Nationals' loss, the Reds have a 5½ lead for a Wild Card spot.

Diamondbacks 9, Dodgers 4: The Dodgers had a chance to be the first team to clinch its division -- and the Diamondbacks, despite leading 4-0 at one point, seemingly gave them every opportunity. But a five-run eighth at the expense of Ronald Belisario and Peter Moylan turned a one-run game into a laugher. The champagne will have to wait.

Mets 5, Giants 4: New York scored four times in the bottom of the ninth, capping off the rally with a two-run walk-off single off the bat of Josh Satin.

Mariners 8, Tigers 0: The A's lost later in the night, meaning the Tigers' loss earlier in the night cost them a chance to draw even with their likely ALDS foe in the standings. Justin Verlander was on the mound for yet another loss -- the team's ninth in his 12 starts since the All-Star Game. Hisashi Iwakuma threw eight shutout innings for the Mariners.

Marlins 4, Phillies 3: Miami ended its four-game losing streak in a game that featured this absolute bomb:

Angels 5, Athletics 4: Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton both hit two-run homers to give Los Angeles its seventh win in eight games.

Twins 4, White Sox 3: Glen Perkins now has 36 saves!

Brewers 7, Cubs 0: Sean Halton hit his first career grand slam and Khris Davis added a solo shot.
