Around the Bases: Dodgers win NL West, John Lackey pitches Red Sox into playoffs

The Dodgers and the Red Sox both clinched playoff spots in dramatic fashion, making their August 2012 mega-deal look like one of most win-win deals of all time. The Tigers rallied against the Mariners, the Pirates finally solved the Padres and lefties battled it out on the hill in CitiField.

The Arizona Republic-USA TODAY S

Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 6: It has been a season-long comeback for the Dodgers so it is only fitting that they clinch the NL West title with a hard-fought comeback against the rival Diamondbacks. Arizona answered Hanley Ramirez' three-run shot in the third with six runs, but Los Angeles scrapped out two more in the sixth and Ramirez tied things up with a solo shot to lead off the seventh. A.J. Ellis then followed suit with a lead-off home run to start the eighth to give the Dodgers the lead, the win and the division.

Red Sox 3, Orioles 1: The Red Sox clinch a playoff berth behind a dominant outing from John Lackey. Lackey pitched a complete game two-hit, two walk gem with eight strikeouts, giving up his only run on a solo homer to Adam Jones in the seventh. Stephen Drew put the Red Sox up early with a two-run home run in the second and Dustin Pedroia followed him with an RBI single one batter later. Boston now needs just two more wins to clinch the division title.

Pirates 10, Padres 1: The Pirates avoid a sweep here against the Padres behind a strong start from Gerrit Cole, who struck out a career high 12 batters over six innings.

Rockies 7, Cardinals 6 (15 innings): The Rockies answered go-ahead runs by St. Louis in the eighth and ninth to send this one into extra innings, where they took it on a walk-off triple from Corey Dickerson.

Tigers 5, Mariners 4: The Tigers came from behind on RBIs from Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez in the seventh to give Doug Fister the win.

Blue Jays 6, Yankees 2: Toronto rookie Todd Redmond allowed just one run over seven innings to play spoiler against the Yankees.

Giants 2, Mets 1: Madison Bumgarner beat out Jon Niese in this lefty pitcher's duel, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out ten.

Indians 2, Astros 1: Cleveland gets its 10th walk-off win of the season on a bases-loaded single from Matt Carson and they stay just on the edge of the playoffs, ½ game out of a wild card spot.

Rangers 8, Rays 2: Elvis Andrus drove in three runs and Mitch Moreland, Alex Rios and Geovany Soto all went deep to back Yu Darvish and put the Rangers in a tie with the Rays in the Wild Card race.

Cubs 5, Brewers 1: Jake Arrieta took a shutout into the seventh and Luis Valbuena, Nate Schierholtz and Brian Bogusevic all homered as the Cubs steamrolled Milwaukee.

Athletics 8, Twins 6: Coco Crisp went 2-for-4 including a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give Oakland the home win and lower the Atheltics' magic number to clinch the American League West to four.
