The Pittsburgh Pirates clinched their first playoff berth since 1992 with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals' 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pirates clinch postseason berth
The Pirates are in the playoffs for the first time in 21 years.

Starling Marte hit a solo home run to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning, and Justin Morneau recorded the final out of the game on a relay throw to the plate to beat Cubs outfielder Nate Schierholtz in the bottom half of the frame.
The Pirates’ win cut their magic number to one, and the Nationals’ failure to get the tying run home in the top of the ninth inning in St. Louis put an end to their postseason hopes and allowed Pittsburgh to celebrate its long-overdue accomplishment a few hundred miles north in the visitors’ clubhouse at Wrigley Field.
Pittsburgh remains two games behind the St. Louis in the National League Central with five games left to play.
