Michael Wacha has no-hitter through 7 innings

The Cardinals rookie is throwing an excellent game against the Nationals and could put his name in the record books with six more outs.

St. Louis Cardinals rookie starting pitcher Michael Wacha may be on the verge of history as he has yet to allow a hit to the Washington Nationals through seven innings of play on Tuesday.

Wacha is making the ninth MLB start of his career. He has made 15 appearances overall for the Cardinals in 2013, posting a 3.21 ERA entering play on Tuesday. Wacha has not yet thrown a complete game in the majors. His career-high in innings pitched is seven, achieved twice this year. During each of those seven-inning games, Wacha allowed just two hits.

Wacha has thrown 86 pitches to Nationals hitters, allowing just one walk to Ryan Zimmerman. Of those 86 pitches, 63 were strikes. He has eight strikeouts on the day.

If Wacha can complete the feat, he would be the third pitcher in 2013 with a no-hitter. The first two came within ten days of each other as Giants' starter Tim Lincecum twirled a no-no on July 13 against the Padres just a week-and-a-half after Reds' pitcher Homer Bailey held the Giants hitless on July 3.

The last Cardinals no-hitter was tossed by Bud Smith on Sept. 3, 2001 in San Diego. No pitcher has thrown a no-hitter in St. Louis since Sept. 26, 1983 when Bob Forsch had a perfect game against the Montreal Expos.

Due up for the Nationals in the eighth inning are Adam LaRoche, Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon.
