MLB injury roundup: Matt Holliday has back stiffness, Phil Coke to have test on elbow

The latest news on a variety of injuries around MLB.

USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday was not in the team's lineup on Tuesday as he continues to suffer from back stiffness, reports Chad Thornburg of MLB.com.

This is the third straight missed game for Holliday, who has helped anchor the NL Central-leading Cardinals offensively. On the year, he has hit .298/.382/.479 with 20 home runs. St. Louis maintains the injury is not serious and that he is day-to-day.

The Cardinals are already missing offensive stalwart Allen Craig. If Holliday remains out into the playoffs, it could be devastating to the team’s chances of advancing.

Tigers Relievers

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Phil Coke suffered a setback with his left elbow, reports Chris Iott of MLive. However, the Tigers did have Bruce Rondon available once again on Tuesday.

“Tight and sore today. I totally want to know what’s going on,” Coke told reporters after he felt tightness following a bullpen session. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Wednesday.

Rondon also had an elbow issue and had not pitched since Sept. 2. He struck out the side in the eighth inning against the Twins on Tuesday to celebrate his return to action.

Jean Segura

The Milwaukee Brewers will only allow shortstop Jean Segura to play in their final series against the Mets if his hamstring is 100 percent, reports MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

Segura tested the injury on Tuesday, but it apparently did not go well. With no playoff appearance in store for Milwaukee, the team is more likely to shut him down for the remainder of the season.

Segura has been one of the best young shortstops in baseball, but tailed off in the second half of the season.

Marco Scutaro

San Francisco Giants manager Burce Bochy said shortstop Marco Scutaro is done for the season, according to Alex Pavlovic of the Mercury News.

Scutaro has been suffering from two finger ailments, including lingering tendon damage in his left pinkie. Most recently, he sprained his left ring finger and will have a splint put back on the injury.

Danny Hultzen

Seattle Mariners top pitching prospect Danny Hultzen will see Dr. James Andrews with what could be a labrum issue.

Hultzen has missed most of the 2013 season with shoulder issues, and re-aggravated the injury recently while throwing in the instructional league.

White Sox injuries

Chicago infielder Jeff Keppinger is set to have surgery on his right shoulder Thursday while pitcher David Purcey left the team to get a second opinion on his UCL strain.

Manny Machado

Machado’s knee injury was diagnosed as a torn knee ligament, but not to the ACL or MCL. He should be ready for spring training with his recovery lasting six-to-eight weeks.
