Around the Bases: Rays, Indians keep winning; Tigers clinch AL Central

One Central division team punched its ticket to the division series on Wednesday while another cut its magic number to one. Plus, a brawl in Atlanta and the end of an era in Colorado.

Rays 8, Yankees 3: Evan Longoria homered twice and David Price tossed seven innings of two-run ball to keep Tampa Bay atop the American League Wild Card standings and eliminate New York from postseason contention.

The Yankees will miss the playoffs for the second time in 19 seasons, while the Rays reduced their magic number to clinch a postseason berth to three.

Indians 7, White Sox 2: Cleveland completed a two-game sweep of Chicago to remain a game behind Tampa Bay and in control of the second Wild Card spot. Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Danny Salazar struck out eight batters in 5⅓ innings.

Tigers 1, Twins 0: Detroit clinched its third consecutive AL Central title behind Max Scherzer, who struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work en route to his 21st win.

Rangers 7, Astros 3: Texas scored five times -- three on Leonys Martin's bases-clearing double -- in the bottom of the fourth to rally past Houston and secure its third straight victory. The Rangers trail the Indians by a game in the Wild Card race.

Cardinals 4, Nationals 1: St. Louis is within one victory -- or one Pittsburgh loss -- of clinching the National League Central title after sweeping Washington.

Cubs 4, Pirates 2: Darnell McDonald hit a three-run homer off of Pirates starter Francisco Liriano to hurt Pittsburgh's chances of winning the division.

Mets 1, Reds 0: Eric Young's RBI single in the third inning, coupled with a strong performance from Daisuke Matsuzaka, ended the Reds' quest for a second straight NL Central crown.

Mariners 6, Royals 0: Hisashi Iwakuma racked up nine strikeouts in eight shutout innings to halt Kansas City's postseason hopes.

Brewers 4, Braves 0: Carlos Gomez's first-inning solo homer off of Paul Maholm resulted in this:

Red Sox 15, Rockies 5: Todd Helton played the final home game of his 17-year MLB career. He was given a horse before the game and gave the Rockies and their fans a gift during it:

Will Middlebrooks homered twice and drove in seven for Boston, which owns the AL's best record by two games.

Angels 3, Athletics 1: Josh Hamilton had two hits and two RBI and Jered Weaver allowed one run in seven innings to put a dent in Oakland's attempt to gain home field advantage throughout the AL playoffs.

Orioles 9, Blue Jays 5: Baltimore snapped a six-game skid behind a two-homer, four-RBI performance from Ryan Flaherty.

Marlins 3, Phillies 2: Placido Polanco had three hits and Adeiny Hechavarria drove in three runs to lead Miami past Cole Hamels and Philadelphia.

Padres 12, Diamondbacks 2: San Diego hit three home runs and four doubles, and Ian Kennedy beat his old team in a blowout at Petco Park.

Dodgers 6, Giants 4: Ricky Nolasco had his third straight poor start for Los Angeles, and Barry Zito allowed just two runs in five innings for a win in his final start in his seven years with San Francisco.
