Around the Bases: Rangers walk off, Alex Cobb blanks Yankees, Indians hang on

Mariano made his final appearance at Yankee and broke into tears as he said goodbye, but Alex Cobb was the best pitcher working in the Bronx on Thursday.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Rangers 6, Angels 5: Jurickson Profar delivered a pinch hit walk-off home run to keep the Rangers one game back in the Wild Card race. Rangers starter Matt Garza went 5 1/3 and allowed four runs on 11 hits and two walks, but he didn't let that lousy performance dampens his enthusiasm.

This is fourth walk-off homer for the Rangers this season and all four have come at home in their last four games in Arlington against the Angels. At this point, you’d think the Angels would have seen it coming. Then again, these kids today just do that kind of thing

Indians 6, Twins 5: The Indians managed to make their fans sweat as they turned a blow-out into a uncomfortably close win in Minnesota. Cleveland got a third inning homer from Yann Gomes and tacked on runs in the sixth, seventh and eight to lead 6-1 in the ninth. Closer Chris Perez completed imploded, however, giving up a two-run shot to Josmil Pinto to put the Twins just one run down. Joe Smith then came in and closed the door with the winning run on first.

Rays 4, Yankees 0: Alex Cobb shut down the Yankees to keep the Rays in the top Wild Card spot. The Tampa righty allowed just three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. Evan Longoria drove in three runs and Delmon Young hit a solo shot for the Rays. It was a touching scene in the eighth inning as Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter went to the mound to take out Mariano Rivera in his final career appearance at Yankee Stadium. The all-time saves leader was overcome with emotion as he embraced his long-time teammates and received a long ovation from the crowd.

Braves 7, Phillies 1: Phllies starter Tyler Cloyd didn't make it out of the second inning. The Braves put five runs against him in the first and tacked on two more in the second chasing him before Philadelphia could record the fourth out of the game. Brian McCann exited the game in the second inning and is day-to-day with a strain in his right adductor.

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 2: The Orioles got seven strong innings of two-hit, one-run baseball from Miguel Gonzalez and a home run and an RBI single from Matt Wieters to beat Toronto.

Padres 3, Diamondbacks 2 (11 innings): Alexi Amarista delivered a bases-loaded, single to give San Diego the walk-off win in the eleventh.

Brewers 4, Mets 2: A four-run second inning sank Dillon Gee and the Mets. David Wright was hit in the head by a pitch and removed from the game, but he escaped without a concussion.

Royals 3, White Sox 2: Two consecutive bunt singles and a throwing error by White Sox catcher Bryan Anderson gave the Royals the go-ahead run in the seventh and earned Jeremy Guthrie his 15th win of the season.

Giants 3, Dodgers 2: Angel Pagan hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth for his second RBI of the night and Tim Lincecum held the Dodgers to two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six. He earned the win in what could be his last start in San Francisco.
