Brandon Beachy injury: Braves RHP undergoes elbow surgery

Beachy is expected to be healthy and ready to pitch by spring training.

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Brandon Beachy underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery on Thursday, reports David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Beachy underwent Tommy John surgery 15 months ago, but Thursday’s procedure was not nearly as invasive. Braves general manager Frank Wren told O’Brien that the ligament is fine, but that Beachy’s elbow needed to be cleaned out to help complete the healing process:

“It’s the type of small irritations that don’t show up on a normal MRI. And so when Dr. Andrews got in there, he found the source of the problems. There were really two areas, one in the back of the elbow and one in the outside, that he had had just these little discomforts over the course of time and couldn’t quite get him over the hump. And he found the reason in both cases. I think everybody is encouraged.”

Beachy made five starts for Atlanta this season, posting a 4.50 ERA over 30 innings. The right-hander battled recurring soreness and inflammation in his elbow during his return to Atlanta, which eventually caused the Braves to shut him down for the remainder of the year.

The starter is expected to make a full recovery by spring training, according to Wren. The Braves hope Beachy can bounce back closer to his career numbers in 2014: Beachy owns a career 3.23 ERA with 275 strikeouts over 267 2/3 innings.
