Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria fires president Larry Beinfest

It seemed inevitable, but now it’s official.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was already making all of the baseball decisions for the Marlins, if reports from earlier this month were to be believed. It seems even more likely that scenario was true, as, according to the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer, Loria has fired longtime general manager and current team President of Baseball Operations Larry Beinfest.

Beinfest was originally hired by Loria before the 2002 season began. They would win the World Series under his front office one year later, and generally had success developing and acquiring promising young players such as Hanley Ramirez, Anibal Sanchez, Giancarlo Stanton, Jose Fernandez, Christian Yelich, and more. With Loria deciding more and more of what the Marlins would do, though -- reports stated he had "marginalized" the front office, there was little need to keep Beinfest around, despite the success he had in building teams for an owner who wanted him to do his job with his hands behind his back, away from any viable resources.

Beinfest’s replacement has been named already -- assistant GM Dan Jennings -- but there’s no definitive word on whether that’s permanent, or if there will be an offseason search. Since Loria has already gone this far, you would be forgiven for assuming that the new president will either be a puppet or Loria himself. There’s comedic possibility in the latter, assuming you aren’t still a Marlins fan, anyway. As for Beinfest, free from Loria’s shackles, he will likely find a job and thrive elsewhere in baseball in a hurry, should a continued career in the game be his wish.
