The Detroit Tigers' pitching staff tied a major league record Friday with their 1,404th strikeout of the season when reliever Jose Veras got Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton to swing through a 2-2 splitter in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Tigers pitchers tie MLB team strikeout record
Jose Veras whiffed Giancarlo Stanton to put the 2013 Tigers in the company of the 2003 Cubs.

The Tigers equaled the previous mark set by the Chicago Cubs in 2003. That year, the Cubs had a pair of starters -- Mark Prior and Kerry Wood -- record 200-plus strikeouts. Ten years later, Tigers hurlers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander accomplished the feat, and Anibal Sanchez has a chance to do the same on Saturday in Miami.
The Cubs set the record with major league batters striking out in 16.4 percent of their plate appearances, a figure that is significantly lower than the 19.8 percent of the time batters have whiffed in 2013. However, the Tigers racked up all of their punch outs while primarily playing in a league that doesn’t have pitchers rounding out the bottom of lineups.
