Brewers will discuss contract extension with SS Jean Segura in offseason

Segura has been one of the bright spots in a dismal 2013 season for the Brewers.

Milwaukee Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin told reporters Saturday that he will contact Jean Segura's agent during the offseason in hopes of agreeing to a longterm contract extension, reports Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Brewers acquired Segura from the Angels as part of the Zack Greinke trade. In his first full season, he has played 145 games and has hit .296/.331/.426 while leading the league with 44 stolen bases and 10 triples. Segura got off to a hot start, but has hit just .246 with a 587 OPS since Aug. 1 while being hampered with a slight ankle injury.

Milwaukee recently confirmed that they would exercise the right to block Segura from playing in the Dominican Republic over the winter, opting instead to give their budding star rest in the offseason. Segura won the Dominican League’s batting title last year.

The Brewers have made a habit of signing players to long term deals before they reach arbitration. Ryan Braun signed an 8 year contract worth $45 million after just two seasons with the Brewers. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy also signed after his second season and starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo was inked to a five year contract after his fourth year.
