General Manager Sandy Alderson and Collins only began discussing an extension this past week. Collins has been with the Mets since 2011 after a club option was picked up for the 2013 season. His original deal will run out after Sunday’s season finale.
The 2013 Mets have a 73-87 record and are third in the National League East in a year where the team was anticipated to be among the worst in the majors. Â Overall, Collins has a 224-260 record in his three years in New York. If the Mets lose their final two games, Collins will have managed to a worse record in each of his three years with the team.
Collins previously managed the Houston Astros and Anaheim Angels during the 1990s but had not managed a major league team in over a decade before the Mets offered him their job.
