Miami Marlins starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez completed the first no-hitter of his career Sunday in the Marlins' 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers. A walk-off wild pitch avoided extra innings and clinched the accomplishment for Alvarez on the final day of the 2013 season.

Alvarez is the third pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the majors this season.
Alvarez did not allow a hit through nine innings, striking out Matt Tuiasosopo with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the 27th out.
Miami went scoreless entering the final frame, leaving the no-hitter in doubt. The Marlins offense finally busted through against Luke Putkonen in the bottom of the ninth.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, advancing to second on a Logan Morrison single. Chris Coghlan drew a two-out walk against the reliever, loading the bases for Greg Dobbs. Putkonen uncorked a wild pitch to Dobbs, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to score the game-winning run.
Alvarez was efficient with his pitches, only throwing 99 while striking out four batters. The right-hander only allowed three baserunners in the game. Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch in the first inning, Jose Iglesias reached on an error in the fifth, and Andy Dirks drew a walk in the ninth.
Detroit did not send use its best lineup in the regular season finale, with Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson all receiving a day off. Still, the no-hitter is an impressive accomplishment for Alvarez, who entered Sunday with only one career complete game.
Alvarez is the first Marlins pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Anibal Sanchez tossed one on Sept. 6, 2006, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the first pitcher to toss a no-hitter at Marlins Park. The game was the first walk-off no-hitter since 1997, when the Pittsburgh Pirates accomplished the feat against the Houston Astros, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
