Wilson Ramos hits Chase Utley’s bat with throw to first

You don’t see this very often, but once is enough for the Nationals’ catcher.

Being a catcher is a tough gig. You have to make snap reactions immediately after receiving a pitch, baserunners are crashing into you at the plate, and you’re in the dirt more often than anyone else on the diamond. Then there’s the whole snap throw thing, when the batter at the plate might be right in front of you as you attempt a throw to first or third.

Wilson Ramos knows what I'm talking about:

The Nationals' backstop attempts a snap throw to first, but Phillies second baseman and left-handed batter Chase Utley is at the plate and in the way -- the throw bounces right off of Utley's bat, which was still up in the air following his swing-and-miss. It's hard to see that this is what happened in real time, as Ramos could have just thrown it straight into the ground, Raul Ibanez style, but nope, this is all bat:

Utley probably held his pose a little longer than he needed to on the follow through, but that's just good baseballing if so, and it resulted in Jimmy Rollins taking second instead of getting nabbed at first.
