Tyler Flowers injury: White Sox C did not disclose severity

Flowers is slated to have exploratory surgery on his shoulder this week. He will miss approximately three-to-six months due to the surgery, meaning there is a possibility he will not be fully recovered by the start of spring training.

The White Sox placed Flowers on the 60-day disabled list on Tuesday, but Flowers reportedly had felt “severe” pain in his shoulder as early as last offseason, before he was named the team’s starting catcher. Flowers says that he has played through the pain because of the opportunity he was given.

“The starting job was definitely a driving force to exhaust every option I could,” Flowers was quoted as saying. “I’ve waited a long time for this opportunity and did everything to avoid missing out.

Manager Robin Ventura did not believe that Flowers would need season ending injury until recently, when Flowers disclosed the level of pain he was feeling.

Flowers, 27, has played in 84 games this year, but has struggled at the plate with a .195/.247/.355 batting line. He has picked up just eight hits since the start of July.
