Jacob Ellsbury injury update: Red Sox CF getting second opinion on sore foot

Ellsbury is missing his second straight game Saturday as Manager John Farrell says his injury is not “day-to-day”.

The Boston Red Sox sent center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury to receive a second opinion on his foot injury Saturday, reports Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. Whether he will need to fly to Denver or if the second opinion will just come from an exchange of information is unclear.

The injury had been being listed as a sore right foot. More specifically, there had been soreness around the navicular bone, located at the top of the foot near the leg. The decision to get a second opinion on the injury is designed to learn if Ellsbury is dealing with a deep bone bruise or if he has a fracture.

“I don’t think we’re looking at something that’s day-to-day here,” Red Sox Manager John Farrell reportedly said.

Farrell also said that Ellsbury was “pissed” about not being able to play on Saturday. Ellsbury reportedly feels he can play through the injury. General Manager Ben Cherington does not believe Ellsbury will miss a large amount of time.

“My understanding is there’s not a long-term concern here. It’s how do we manage it over the next several weeks,” said Cherington.

Ellsbury, 29, has already had an MRI on his foot, revealing inflammation in the area. Ellsbury has been wearing a walking boot since that diagnosis. The team feels they need another group of tests in order to have a better understanding of the injury and how long Ellsbury may be out.

If Ellsbury did fracture his navicular bone, it would be the same injury that Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia suffered on June 25, 2010. He missed all but two games for the remainder of that season.

Ellsbury missing a significant amount of time could be a big blow for the Red Sox, especially if the injury continues into the playoffs. Boston currently holds a 7.5 game lead in the AL East. Along with his excellent defense in center field, Ellsbury has been one of Boston’s strongest bats. He has hit .299/.355/.424 this season with a league-leading 52 stolen bases.

Ellsbury is slated to become a free agent at the end of the 2013 season.
