Dylan Bundy injury: Orioles prospect progressing well after Tommy John

Bundy says he is finally pain free. He could return to action some time in late June.

Greg Fiume

Orioles' pitching prospect Dylan Bundy is on schedule to make his return this summer, according to The Baltimore Sun's Eduardo Encina.

Bundy, 21, underwent Tommy John Surgery in June after injuring his pitching elbow in spring training. He appeared in the majors briefly in 2012, and was expected to compete for a spot in the Baltimore rotation before sustaining the injury.

He was considered the Orioles’ best prospect before hitting the disabled list, and one of the most promising pitchers throughout the minors.

Tommy John Surgery has come a long way over the last few years, but it still takes right around a year for pitchers to get back into game situations. Bundy has already resumed throwing from 45 feet and will continue to advance his throwing program in effort to reach his goal of returning on June 28.

Until then, Baltimore remains active in the free agent market for starting pitchers. They currently have Bundy's fellow prospect Kevin Gausman, as well as Bud Norris, Chris Tillman, and Miguel Gonzalez set to open the year in the rotation. Wei-Yin Chen will join that group after he's fully recovered from knee surgery.
