White Sox extend manager Robin Ventura

Ventura and the Sox have agreed to a multiyear deal.

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

The Chicago White Sox have announced a multiyear extension with manager Robin Ventura, according to the team. Ventura's previous three-year deal was set to expire after the season.

Since taking over for Ozzie Guillen in 2012, Ventura has led the Sox to a 148-176 record, including a second-place AL Central finish in 2012. The team disappointed in 2013, finishing the year in last place with a 63-99 record, which was largely due to an aging, one-dimensional lineup.

The front office has been busy this winter remodeling the team's roster -- which will feature additions like Jose Abreu, Adam Eaton, and Matt Davidson. Those players, along with Chris Sale and Avisail Garcia could provide the Sox with a stable nucleus of talent for general manager Rick Hahn to build around.

Ventura, now 46, had no prior managing experience before the Sox hired him. However, he has 16 years of experience as a Major League player. From 1989 to 2004, Ventura hit .267/.362/.444 for the Sox, Mets, Yankees, and Dodgers.

The club appears to be optimistic about his future managing the team.

“There was never really any question in our minds as to who we wanted in the White Sox dugout now and into the future.” - Rick Hahn

The White Sox will open their season against the Twins at Cellular Field on March 31.
