Mets rumors: New York looking to add veteran reliever

The team is considering several options to improve their bullpen.

The Mets will continue to pursue a veteran reliever, and are said to have a "couple of irons in [the] fire," according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin.

As things stand now, the club is likely to use Bobby Parnell as their closer for the 2014 season, but he had season-ending surgery last year on what turned out to be a herniated disc, so it appears as though the team will add some apt reinforcements.

They've been connected to for Rays closer Fernando Rodney in rumors this offseason, but he could one of the more expensive options that remain on the open market. Several other teams, including the Mariners and Orioles, are also said to be in the mix to sign Rodney.

Rodney came back down to earth last season after an otherworldly 0.60 ERA in 2012, though he was still productive for Tampa Bay. He put up a 3.38 ERA and 37 saves for the Rays last season.

Last season, the Mets bullpen finished with the 22nd-best ERA in baseball as a unit, so even if Parnell returns at full strength, additional impact relievers could help them improve on what was a disappointing bullpen in 2013.

The Mets could also consider reunions with right handers Frank Francisco or Francisco Rodriguez, or lefty Oliver Perez.
