Royals, Orioles ALCS Game 3 rained out
The schedule shifts a day as Monday night’s contest has been called for rain hours before it was set to begin.
It’s been raining in Kansas City for most of Monday and it’s expected to continue to do so well into Tuesday morning. For that reason, Major League Baseball has already cancelled Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. Game 3 will now be played on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, the time that Game 4 would have been, while Game 4 now moves to Wednesday for a 4 p.m. start. If necessary, there will be a Game 5 on Thursday, which previously was a scheduled off day, with the expectation that this game will also begin at 4 p.m.
Normally you might see MLB attempt to fight Mother Nature a bit and see if it could fit the game in, but since Thursday offers an obvious solution -- if one even proves necessary, as the Royals are up 2-0 in the ALCS and could very well sweep -- there is little reason to keep fans waiting. In addition, Peter Woodfork, MLB’s Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations, blames the rain that’s already fallen for the decision.
Peter Woodfork of MLB on reason to PPD: It's already what's fallen as well as what's coming up. One inch of rain has already fallen.
— Chris Fickett (@ChrisFickett) October 13, 2014 Game 3 was supposed to feature Jeremy Guthrie on the mound for the Royals against the Orioles’ Wei-Yin Chen. It appears that we’ll still see that matchup on Tuesday -- Ned Yost has already said Guthrie still gets the start, and Chen will still go for Baltimore -- but it’s unknown if pushing the series a day back will cause any change in the expected Game 4 starters.
