Royals vs. Giants, 2014 World Series Game 4: Time, TV schedule, live stream and more

Ryan Vogelsong will likely need to get back on track after his first bad postseason start for the Giants to avoid winding up with their backs against the wall.

Ryan Vogelsong's unprecedented stretch of great postseason starts ended in his last outing, but the 37-year-old right-hander believes his experience on baseball's biggest stage will help him Saturday when he starts Game 4 of the World Series.

"The big thing is just learning how to curb [my emotions]," Vogelsong said on Friday, speaking to reporters before the Giants' Game 3 loss to the Royals. "There is extra adrenaline. It's going to make you throw harder and do some things that you probably don't do on a normal Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee or Colorado."

That adrenaline worked against Vogelsong in Game 4 of the NLCS against the Cardinals. After beginning his postseason career with five consecutive starts in which he allowed one run or fewer, Vogelsong surrendered four runs on seven hits in only three innings before the Giants rallied to win.

“I was trying to make some adjustments mechanically, and I think that had something to do with the velocity,” Vogelsong said in response to a question about how increased velocity affected his command.

The veteran hurler will now have to deal with a Royals offense that makes its living on putting pressure on opposing pitchers and defenses. Vogelsong is well aware of their strategy and the damage they can do by stealing bases.

“It’s something you have to pay attention to,” Vogelsong said. “We all know it’s there, but it’s not something you can just say, ‘All right, I’m going to let this guy just do whatever he wants over there.’”

Jason Vargas will start opposite Vogelsong, making his first appearance since Oct. 15, when he held the Orioles to one run in 5⅓ innings in Kansas City's pennant-clinching win.
