2014 ALCS schedule: Orioles vs. Royals
Game 1 is Friday, Oct. 10 at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals both completed three-game sweeps of their Division Series on Sunday. Now both will wait nearly a week to play the 2014 American League Championship Series, which begins on Friday, Oct. 10 at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
The Orioles dispatched the Detroit Tigers with a 2-1 win on Sunday in Detroit, behind a strong start from Bud Norris and a two-run home run from major league home run leader Nelson Cruz. The Royals followed suit with an 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday night in Kansas City.
This is the first playoff meeting between the Orioles and Royals. It's the first trip to the ALCS for Baltimore since 1997, which was also the last season they won the American League East before capturing the 2014 division crown with 96 wins. The Royals, winners of 89 games in the regular season, haven't been to the ALCS since beating the Toronto Blue Jays in 1985 on their way to a World Series title in the last playoff appearance for Kansas City before this season.

The long layoff is an equalizer of sorts, allowing both teams to set their starting pitching rotations as they see fit. The Royals may benefit the most, with ace James Shields in line to start Game 1 on Friday, on four days rest after picking up the win in Sunday's closeout of the Angels in the ALDS.
The Royals beat the Orioles in four of their seven matchups in 2014, including three one-run games. The Royals won two of three games in Baltimore from April 25-27, and the two teams split a four-game set in Kansas City from May 15-18.
