Dodgers vs. Cardinals, 2014 NLDS Game 4 final score: Matt Adams homer lifts St. Louis to 3-2 win
Matt Adams delivered the crushing blow off of Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw, and the Cardinals are back in the NLCS for the fourth consecutive season.


Matt Adams hit a go-ahead home run off of Clayton Kershaw in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 4 of the NLDS and the St. Louis Cardinals held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2. The Cardinals will move on to face the winner of the San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals in the NLCS.
Kershaw entered the inning having allowed only one hit, but the Cardinals got back-to-back singles from Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta that went off the gloves of Dodgers infielders before Adams delivered the crushing blow, a three-run homer on a line drive to right field. Before Tuesday, Adams was was a .222/.291/.306 hitter with one home run in 79 postseason plate appearances.
The Dodgers threatened in the ninth inning against Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal when A.J. Ellis walked and Dee Gordon singled, but Carl Crawford grounded into a game-ending force out, giving Rosenthal the seventh postseason save of his career.
It was the second loss of the series for Kershaw, who allowed three runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out nine.
Cardinals starter Shelby Miller failed to make it out of the sixth inning, but he surrendered only two runs on five hits in 5⅔ frames. The 23-year-old right-hander struck out four and issued three walks.
Crawford finished with two hits and Juan Uribe added an RBI single for the Dodgers, who were eliminated by the Cardinals for the second consecutive postseason.
