Tony Sanchez thrives on Pirates’ catcher competition

The Pittsburgh Pirates might lose starter Russell Martin to free agency, but on Wednesday acquired catcher Francisco Cervelli from the New York Yankees as part of their contingency plan. Bringing in a new catcher is nothing new to backup Tony Sanchez, who is used to the competition. In fact, he welcomes it.

Sanchez has hit .252/.295/.378 with four home runs in 48 games in parts of the last two seasons, including 31 total starts behind the plate.
