Max Scherzer reportedly wants more than $200 million

Count the Tigers among the teams not interested in giving Scherzer that kind of cash.

Free-agent starting pitcher Max Scherzer is seeking a deal worth in excess of $200 million, according to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi.

Scherzer, widely viewed as the top pitcher on the open market ahead of Jon Lester, would become only the second pitcher in major league history to receive a $200 million contract if he's able to get a team to bite. Three-time NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw set the record by signing a seven-year, $215 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers last January.

The Detroit Tigers, Scherzer's former team, don't seem interested in shelling out that kind of money. A possible return to the Motor City is "not happening," a team official recently told MLB Network's Peter Gammons.

Scherzer posted a 3.15 ERA/127 ERA+ in a career-high 220⅓ innings in 2014. Since the beginning of his Cy Young-winning 2013 campaign, the 30-year-old right-hander owns a 3.02 ERA/135 ERA+ with 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
