Dodgers rumors: Josh Beckett is confident he’ll be ready by the beginning of the season
Beckett is recovering well from surgery and expects to be ready to go to begin the 2014 season.

Beckett had an operation seven months ago to remove the top rib just under his armpit on his right side. It was done to treat a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome, which causes pain, numbness and discomfort in the arm. The surgery frees up the shoulder area and allows for better blood flow and reduces nerve compression.
The injury led to one of Beckett’s worst seasons of his career. He threw only 43⅓ innings, the fewest in any season since his rookie year back in 2001. He also had an unsightly 5.19 ERA.
The three-time all star is feeling healthy now and ready to compete for a job in the Dodgers' rotation. He should slot in behind Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke and Hyun-jin Ryu, competing with Dan Haren and recent signee Paul Maholm for the final two spots. Chad Billingsley will also be in the conversation as he should be fully recovered from Tommy John surgery by mid-season. Both Beckett and Maholm have intimated that they are comfortable with a bullpen role if it comes to that.
