In what could only be described as unsurprising, but still disappointing news, Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez will sit out the entire 2014 season in order to deal with injuries that have plagued him for many years, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. He was placed on the Restricted List to make room on the 40-man roster for Fernando Rodney on Thursday.

Gutierrez has a long injury history that includes hamstring problems, oblique issues, a concussion, and all sorts of other ailments in addition to gastrointestinal symptoms that bothered him last season.

He signed an incentive laden one-year, $1 million deal with the Mariners this offseason, but will fail to play 100 or more games for the fourth consecutive season. Gutierrez was an average regular in three of his four full seasons with a career line of .256/.306/.391 to go along with superlative defense in centerfield.
But his 2009 season was anything but average and it’s the year that causes so many to dream about his talent and continue to hope for at least one more healthy season. In 629 plate appearances that year he hit .289/.339/.425 calling Safeco Field home while having one of the most impressive defensive seasons since the advent of modern fielding statistics. He also ran the bases well for good measure, ending his season at 6.0 wins above replacement, per FanGraphs. A 6 WAR season, for reference, is somewhere between All-Star and MVP caliber. In the four seasons since, he’s totaled 3.1 WAR in and he has played in just 173 games since 2011.
