David Ortiz, Red Sox haven’t negotiated extension since December

Ortiz’ agent expects to meet with team officials later this week.

David Ortiz probably isn't going anywhere, but until he actually signs a contract extension with the Red Sox, his departure remains a possibility. According to Tim Britton of the Providence Journal, Ortiz' agent, Fern Cuza, has not met with the team since December, although that's not necessarily a sign that talks are at an impasse.

Cuza has said he expects to met with members of the Red Sox front office later this week, as Sean McAdam of CSN New England reports.

Earlier in the offseason, Ortiz said it would be his “time to move on” if the Red Sox failed to offer a multiyear extension, but that’s just the kind of frankness New Englanders have to expect from Big Papi.

The Red Sox will likely offer Ortiz the extra year he wants.

“We’re good. We’re good. We talked, they’re talking and I just asked for one year. I didn’t ask for anything crazy. It wasn’t like I asked for a five-year deal. It’s a one-year extension I asked for.”

Ortiz, now 38, hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. He hit .309/.395/.594 in 600 plate appearances last season, and other than missing some time in 2012, he’s been exceptionally consistent in his late-30s. He finished tenth in AL MVP balloting and appeared in his ninth All Star Game in 2013.
