The Mariners have "no expectations" for former prospect Jesus Montero. The 24-year-old showed up to camp 40 pounds over his target weight, prompting an unfortunate response from general manager Jack Zduriencik, as Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.

It’s easy to see why the Mariners suddenly have zero expectations for the former prospect.

— Scott Weber (@LookoutLanding) February 18, 2014 Montero had the worst season of his Mariners career in 2013. Reporting to camp 40 pounds heavier than the target weight the team set for him hasn’t earned him any praise from Jack Z:
“We are disappointed in how he came in physically ... It’s up to him. I have zero expectations for Jesus Montero. Any expectations I had are gone.”
Montero was the main piece in the trade that sent right hander Michael Pineda to Yankees in 2012. He was expected to be an excellent hitter, thanks to huge numbers in the Yankees' minor league system.
Since being traded to Seattle, Montero’s work ethic has come into question. The M’s new manager, Lloyd McClendon issued something of an ultimatum to Montero after seeing the state he presenting himself in this spring.
“I can’t want it for him. At some point, the light has to come on for all of us. When I talked with him, I told him he’s at a crossroads. It’s time to put up or shut up.”
If Montero doesn’t get the message now, he might not be with Seattle for much longer. He says he is “comfortable” with his weight, and if he hits, it might not matter what the scales say, but when you’re on thin ice, it probably isn’t a good idea to tack on 40 pounds.
