Diamondbacks rumors: Team could still add free agent

The Diamondbacks could yet add a free agent before spring training officially gets underway, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

Gilbert opines that Arizona could focus on adding a starting pitcher. They were one of the finalists for Masahiro Tanaka, who ended up signing with the New York Yankees. They were also interested in Matt Garza, but GM Kevin Towers was leery of offering a deal longer than three years to any pitcher but Tanaka. Garza got four years from the Brewers.

As it stands, the Diamondbacks have a rotation including Patrick Corbin, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and Wade Miley. After trading Tyler Skaggs to the Angels in the Mark Trumbo deal, they now have prospects Randall Delgado and Archie Bradley penciled into the fifth spot. It seems they may not be comfortable with that.

The same old faces are still on the market, as Ubaldo Jimenez, Ervin Santana and Bronson Arroyo have all yet to find homes. Jimenez and Santana are both tied to draft pick compensation, so the Diamondbacks would be forced to give up their first-round draft pick if they were to sign either. Arroyo could be a good fit in the desert, as he is durable and likely inexpensive (at least, relative to Jimenez and Santana), if not spectacular.

Arroyo has topped 199 innings in nine straight seasons. He has been a perfectly serviceable starter for the Reds in recent years, boasting a 4.05 ERA in his time in the Queen City. He hasn't had a great year since 2006 though, which is a long time ago for the 37-year-old.
