MLB roundup: Orioles offer Korean pitcher Suk-min Yoon a contract, Mets sign Kyle Farnsworth

With an offer on the table, the Orioles appear to be the front-runners to land the Korean ace.

Chung Sung-Jun

The Baltimore Orioles have made an offer to Korean starting pitcher Suk-min Yoon, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Yoon has attracted a good deal of attention from teams in search of starting pitching in the wake of the Yankees signing Masahiro Tanaka, but this is the first report of an actual offer for the right-hander. Yoon has been connected to the Rangers as well as the Giants recently, but on Monday reports from Korea cited the Orioles as front-runners in the bidding, so this development is not entirely unexpected. There are no details yet on the length or dollar amount of the offer.

Mets sign Karl Farnsworth to a minor league deal

The Mets are searching for relievers with closing experience, and they picked one of those up on Monday in 37-year-old Kyle Farnsworth, who was signed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Farnsworth will earn $1 million if he makes the major league team and he could make another $1.5 million from incentives if he can stick there, per Jon Heyman of CBS Sports The veteran reliever posted a 4.70 ERA in 38 1/3 innings last season pitching for the Rays and the Pirates. But he is just two seasons removed from the best season of his career. In 2011, he posted a 2.18 ERA with 25 saves as a member of the Rays.

Nationals and Rays talking Jose Lobaton trade

The Nationals are looking for a backup catcher to give them some security behind starter Wilson Ramos and trading for Rays' backup Jose Lobaton is one option they are exploring. Lobaton hit .249/.320/.394 in 311 plate appearances for Tampa Bay while splitting time behind the plate with Jose Molina. The Rays acquired backstop Ryan Hanigan from the Reds in December, so it makes sense that they would be shopping Lobaton as the season draws near.

Orioles sign Alex Gonzalez to a minor league deal

Baltimore has added 36-year-old shortstop Alex Gonzalez on a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, according to the Associated Press. The slick-fielding, offensively-challenged veteran will get a shot at making the Orioles bench as a utility-infielder this spring. Gonzalez began the 2013 season with the Brewers, but was released in early June after hitting .177/.203/.230 in 118 plate appearances.
