Chris Capuano, Joe Saunders on Orioles radar

The Baltimore Orioles are looking at veteran free agent starting pitchers Joe Saunders and Chris Capuano as possible upgrades to the team's rotation, reports Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

The Orioles have been looking for an innings-eating starting pitcher all offseason, but lost out on Bronson Arroyo earlier this week to the Diamondbacks. Baltimore had reportedly been the next closest to signing the former Reds pitcher. The Orioles have also been mentioned as possible candidates to land Ervin Santana or Ubaldo Jimenez as well, but there appears to be internal debate about whether the team would want to give up their draft pick.

Neither Capuano nor Saunders would require draft compensation, and both would likely be signable on a cheap deal. Capuano, 35, has spent the last two seasons with the Dodgers. He started 33 games in 2012 with a 3.72 ERA, then made 20 starts and four relief appearances last year with a 4.26 ERA.

Saunders, 32, made 32 starts for the Mariners last year, posting a 5.26 ERA and 1.60 WHIP. He had been better the last two years, however, with a 3.69 ERA in 2011 and a 4.07 mark in 2012. Baltimore could see him as a bounce-back candidate going forward.

Despite being a playoff contender and playing in the tough AL East, the Orioles have been quiet on the free agent market this offseason, with Delmon Young being perhaps their biggest signing. Though the team scored the fourth-most runs in the AL last year, their starting rotation had the fourth-worst ERA. Furthermore, just two players were able to surpass 150 innings on the year. The Orioles had reportedly made pitching a priority this offseason, but thus far have been hesitant to pull the trigger on a player.
