Very soon, you’ll be able to hold a baseball themed coin in your hand. The coin, which the US Mint is ready to start production on, features a glove on one side and a baseball on the other and was designed by contest-winner Cassie McFarland. Don’t try to put it in a vending machine, however, because the coin will be curved to honor the honor the shape of the famous horsehide.

In what’s sure to be a treat for baseball fans and coin collectors, soon you’ll be able to pay for things with a baseball themed coin.


The coins will come in fifty cent, one dollar, and five dollar denominations and were commissioned as part of The National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act of 2012. The US Mint will produce the coins in their San Francisco facility and they should go on sale early this year ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Hall of Fame. The curved design, the first of its kind for US currency, required painstaking research and design and drew upon the work of other countries that have used curved currency in the past.
