HDWEB: Baseball has the best brackets and the greatest double *BOOP* play you’ve ever seen

In today’s HOW DARE WE ENJOY BASEBALL, we remember that baseball has the very best brackets, we look at Jose Iglesias and Patrick Corbin injury fallout, we #SMELLBASEBALL, and we love the best/worst double play of all time. YES!

Good afternoon HDWEB’ers, it’s March 17th and baseball has the best brackets. Here’s everything you need to know.

If you have ideas or suggestions, send 'em my way at @justinbopp.

  • Ervin Santana's preparation and timetable - Talking Chop
Ervin Santana and Fredi González discuss the timetable for Santana's insertion into the Braves' rotation and his preparations for the 2014 season.

  • Allen Craig hitting analysis, including a look at his 2013 "power outage" - Viva El Birdos

  • The "2013 power outage" is pretty apparent after looking at the ISO heat maps side-by-side. Many hot zones in 2012 became cold zones in 2013. The most glaring difference is boxed in yellow on both maps.

Despite having nearly the same amount at bats in the zone (39 vs. 37), Craig's ISO in 2013 was 383 points lower than it was in 2012.
  • CC Sabathia and his new cutter - Pinstripe Alley

  • Sabathia's velocity probably isn't coming back, and he's acknowledged that he's prepared to pitch with whatever his left arm has in it. His command, however, is much more likely to bounce back. Should that occur, the home run totals will subside a bit.

Knowing this, pitch location should be the primary concern for CC as he prepares for the regular season. Despite the fact that adding a cutter won't hone his command, and my general unenthusiastic opinion about pitch fiddling, if one squints just enough, there are some reasons to hold out hope for the pitch.
  • Rating managerial effectiveness - Beyond the Box Score
What are some ways to measure manager effectiveness? This post lists a few but it seems to me that every one of these comes with the conclusion that 1) it's very difficult to measure managerial effectiveness, and 2) managerial impact is likely overrated in all the wrong places (lineups) and underrated in all the wrong places (clubhouse harmony). The increasingly common wisdom that managers can't really win games for you but they might lose them holds. For now.
