Jose Iglesias injury: Tigers shortstop reports improvement in shin splints

There’s no timetable for his return, but Detroit’s medical team is working with Iglesias in hopes of getting him back on the field soon.

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias has being dealing with shin splints for most of the offseason, but Detroit's medical is working diligently to help him get back onto the field, as MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.

They built orthotics for the 24-year-old, which sounds kind of strange, but as Iglesias mentions, they “really helped [him]” in Boston.

He won’t return to the team’s spring lineup right away, but Iglesias is pleased with the early results.

As Beck reports, he’s scheduled to hit in a cage today, and his treatment will continue as he prepares to take infield practice in hopes of returning to game action.

If Iglesias misses considerable time with the injury at any point this season, the Tigers could choose to use 22-year-old infielder Hernan Perez or prospect Eugenio Suarez at short, however, Igelsias' injury isn't currently projected to cost him any regular season starts.

After making his way to Detroit in the Jake Peavy/Avisail Garcia trade last season, Iglesias batted .259/.306/.348 for the Tigers and made several highlight-reel plays in the field. He posted the third-best UZR/150 in the American League for shortstops with at least 500 innings at the position.

The team is optimistic that the shin splints will not be a long-term issue.
