White Sox Rumors: Calls coming in on De Aza, Viciedo

With Adam Eaton taking over in center, Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo are drawing interest on the trade market.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

After picking up Adam Eaton in a deal with the Diamondbacks and Avisail Garcia in one with the Tigers over the last seven months, the White Sox don't have enough playing time for both Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo, which has led a number of teams to call the South Siders about making one available in a deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Viciedo is five years younger than De Aza, but has had less success at the major league level. He found his way into just over 100 plate appearances in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons, showing an average ability to get on base and some signs of power. In each of the two years since, he’s had at least 450 trips to the plate but has failed to push his OBP over .305. He’s flashed some respectable power (39 home runs since 2012), but combined with below average work on the bases and in the field, he’s failed to establish himself as an average big league regular.

De Aza had a terrific stretch in 2011 in which he hit .329/.400/.520 over 171 plate appearances, but went on to demonstrate why we don’t make judgments about players based on fewer than 200 times at bat. He was a solid player in each of the next two seasons, but the bat settled in closer to league average, while his ability to add value on the bases shined. De Aza’s glovework is a bit of an open question, which evaluations ranging from average to well below average in center, but he should be serviceable in a corner.

Viciedo’s youth is appealing for a team thinking ahead, but De Aza has been a solid regular over the last couple of seasons and would be a better bet to provide value to a team focused solely on 2014.

The Tigers could be interested at the right price given the recent injury to Andy Dirks, but the Reds could also be a team to watch given some uncertainty in two of their three outfield spots. Realistically, neither player can offer a contender a serious upgrade over the status quo, but they would be able to provide depth for a team worried about the health of one of their outfielders. It could also be a chance for a non-contender like the Cubs to pick up a useful piece at below market cost with the intent to flip them or the player they are replacing later on in the season.

The White Sox are likely hoping for an established starter to go down with a nagging injury over the next few days, but if not, they are likely to get something for Viciedo or De Aza who could help a variety of teams in some capacity in 2014 and beyond.
