The Minnesota Twins made a three-year offer to free agent pitcher Ervin Santana, but the right-hander rejected the deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman reports that Santana is likely to sign a one-year contract if he can't get reasonably close to his previous demand of four years and $50 million.

The Twins have been active on the free agent pitching market this winter, inking Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to multi-year pacts and re-signing Mike Pelfrey. Those three figure to be joined in the rotation by veteran holdover Kevin Correia, but none of the various fifth-starter candidates are particularly attractive. Scott Diamond, Samuel Deduno and Vance Worley are all out of options, which means they will have to be passed through waivers if they don't make the team. However, if Minnesota doesn't feel comfortable rolling with any of them, it could make sense to add another free agent before the season starts.

Santana, meanwhile, is struggling to find a home for 2014. After rejecting a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Kansas City Royals, his demands have dropped from a nine-figure mega-contract down to 4/$50M and now to a one-year show-me deal that could, at best, match the qualifying offer that he originally turned down. The Blue Jays and Orioles are currently the favorites to land the 31-year-old hurler, but the Rockies and Phillies are also believed to be in the mix.
