The Daily Puig: Jimmy Rollins hits grand slam for 200th homer

Yasiel Puig didn’t play Monday, but don’t worry, other players picked up the slack.

Ronald Martinez

Yasiel Puig is everything we at SB Nation love about baseball. He's capable of ridiculous feats of athleticism and strength, has an over-sized personality, and is just flat-out entertaining to watch even when he's not doing anything special. We plan to celebrate all of that wonderful stuff each morning with The Daily Puig, in which we'll focus on whatever occurred during the previous days' games that was most in the spirit of our patron saint of baseball, Yasiel Puig.

Sadly, Puig didn't play on Monday, so we have nothing to report on his season. Jimmy Rollins did play, however, and he hit a grand slam off of Rangers' Opening Day starter Tyler Scheppers -- the first of the 2014 season:

Rollins-gs-200

Not only is it a grand slam, but you catch Rollins admiring his handiwork a bit. As an ardent supporter of batters standing there as long as they want to post-bomb, I’m disappointed none of the available camera angles let us see Rollins watching it longer.

Not only was this a grand slam, but it was also Rollins 200th career homer, making him one of just 18 players ever to record at least 100 triples, 400 doubles, and 200 homers. It also ended up being the difference in the end, with the Phillies besting the Rangers in a slugfest, 14-10.
